There are narrow-minded people everywhere. We ought to be cautious about taking a couple of incidents and making a hasty induction about an entire society.
Twenty-five years ago, I was visiting a friend in an American city. The Franciscan friary where I was staying was in a troubled neighbourhood. My friend and I were walking in the neighbourhood in broad daylight. A young man, who appeared to be on drugs, accosted us and said, “What are you all doing in the ghetto? We don’t like white folks.” Am I to draw a general conclusion from the actions of this one man?
I lived in Quebec City during the constitutional crisis of the early 1990’s, when, night after night, the francophone media flashed an image of anglophones in Ontario trampling the Quebec flag. Feelings were running high, but I never experienced an incident of a personal nature.
For there to be social peace, cooler heads, to say nothing of justice, must prevail.
